More about the Financial Reality Fair

The need for financial literacy has never been greater. Credit unions play an integral role in assisting young adults with a better understanding of financial literacy through partnering with area high schools to provide Financial Reality Fairs. This Financial Reality Fair is being sponsored by Peninsula Credit Union with assistance from the Shelton-Mason Chamber of Commerce, Our Community Credit Union, and the Economic Development Council of Mason County.

What is a Financial Reality Fair?
The Financial Reality Fair provides students with a hands-on opportunity to live within a budget. Using a mobile app, this “real world” assigns each student a mock career and salary, deducts things like taxes, and then they are tasked with budgeting their money wisely by making real life decisions. Students will visit booths staffed by volunteers to make critical life decisions. Community volunteers play help create excitement, a little bit of pressure to make decisions, and have fun! At the end of the experience, participants will have learned what it takes to make ends meet from month to month, and will have a better appreciation of the importance of budgeting, financial planning, and making wise purchasing choices.

Volunteer Requirements
Following State of Washington and Shelton School District requirements, prior to the event, all volunteers will be required to submit a background check form and proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Please print, complete, and sign the background checks and vaccination information and submit to the district by Friday, October 15.

You may provide the form either:

  • in-person at the district office (701 S First St, Shelton), along with a copy of your vaccination card; or
  • via e-mail (to jramirez@sheltonschools.org) by scanning your completed form and a copy of your vaccination card.
