Trading Screens for Trailheads
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk through the forest or a more ambitious day hike, some of the region’s best outdoor experiences are just a short drive away.
Lower Lena Lake remains one of Mason County’s most popular destinations for good reason. The trail winds through massive evergreens before opening to the lake’s waters, making it a favorite for families, visitors, and longtime locals alike. Murhut Falls offers a shorter outing with a rewarding waterfall view, while the Duckabush River Trail provides a chance to venture deeper into the Olympic Peninsula’s backcountry. Hoodsport Trail Park and Spider Lake round out the list with options for mountain bikers, hikers, and those simply hoping to explore somewhere new.
Of course, many people continue to ask about Staircase following last year’s Bear Gulch Fire. The area remains closed while Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest crews continue mitigation work and safety improvements along the Lake Cushman corridor. While no reopening timeline has been announced, progress continues behind the scenes and many are hopeful the beloved area will once again welcome visitors in the future.
Until then, there is no shortage of trails to explore right here in Mason County. Whether you’re revisiting a longtime favorite or trying somewhere new, summer is the perfect excuse to head outside and see where the trail leads.
