Chamber convenes feedback for WSDOT

Published

On February 18, the Chamber gathered members of the business community for a briefing with WSDOT on an upcoming Fish Barrier Removal project. This project is located in both Mason and Thurston Counties on State Route 108 and Highway 101 near Little Creek Casino Resort. A full copy of the presentation can be found here.

The purpose of the briefing was for WSDOT to share information about the project and to get feedback from businesses who would likely be impacted. In particular, WSDOT solicited feedback on traffic management options. Construction of this project is expected to occur in 2023 and 2024.

To summarize, along SR 108, at milepost 5.5 and 5.54, and at milepost 8.89, there are two traffic management options to consider:

  • Build temporary alternating one-way bypass lanes that would be in operation for multiple months, or
  • Fully close the road at the culvert replacement location for a short period of time.

A temporary alternating one-way bypass would allow traffic to pass through the construction site, with an estimated 3-to-5 minute delay (24/7) at each location, during the course of the project. A temporary traffic signal system would be implemented. This option would extend the duration of the construction project, create a much larger environmental footprint, require easements on private properties, and increase safety risks at the construction sites.

The advantages of the full-closure option are that the project could be completed more quickly, full closure requires a much smaller environmental footprint, and less use of private property. The disadvantage is that it involves a worst case scenario detour of up to 30 miles during the time the road is fully closed at the culvert replacement site.

WSDOT is requesting feedback and preference as to the full-closure options or the alternating one-way bypass options. Comments are requested by mid-March to ensure it can be taken into consideration as the parameters established will be in the Design-Build contract. Please send comments and questions to WSDOT Project Engineer Bill Elliott P.E. at elliotb@wasdot.wa.gov.
