Early Schools in Mason County Exhibit Open Mason County Historical Society Museum

Now open, Mason County Historical Society Museum presents “More Than a Building: Early Schools in Mason County,” an exhibit focusing on the role of early schoolhouses in local communities.
As settlers moved west in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many small schools were established to educate children throughout Mason County. These schools were crucial in building the communities around them.
This exhibit showcases a small portion of the museum’s collection on these schools and their impact. Through photos, artifacts, and documents, visitors will get a glimpse into the history of education in Mason County and its importance to the area’s development.
The museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10:00a-4:00p, and Saturday, 11:00a-4:00p. Admission is free.
The Mason County Historical Society (MCHS) was formed in 1969, when members of the community realized that the history of the area could easily be lost. The downtown museum maintains an extensive archive of historical materials, including photos, newspapers, letters, diaries, periodicals and maps. For more information, contact MCHS at (360) 426-1020.
