Beyond the Bookshelf: Timberland Regional Library

Published on

In a world that’s constantly evolving, it’s comforting to know there are still places where curiosity is celebrated, connection is encouraged, and everyone is welcome. Timberland Regional Library (TRL) has long served as a trusted community anchor, and its reach extends well beyond the walls of its buildings. Across five counties—including Mason County—TRL supports more than half a million residents through 29 branch locations and 250 dedicated staff. With a focus on learning, equity, and possibility, the organization envisions its libraries as welcoming spaces where everyone can connect, grow, and explore.

Last year, TRL introduced several exciting additions in Mason County that showcase its creativity and community spirit. One standout is The Jolly Reader: a 26-foot, ADA-accessible pirate ship handcrafted by TRL staff for the Shelton Library’s children’s area. More than just a play structure, it represents the library’s commitment to creating welcoming, inspiring spaces for all ages. The installation has already drawn hundreds of families, reinforcing the library’s role as a place where wonder and learning go hand in hand.

As a community-focused organization, TRL understands that partnerships are essential. Its core values—access for all, collaboration, inclusion, and responsible stewardship—guide each of these relationships. TRL works closely with educators, nonprofits, civic groups, and businesses to create responsive, inclusive spaces. Through efforts like the Anywhere Library mobile service, the No Shhh…It’s the TRL Podcast, and Touch-A-Truck, the organization continues to expand its reach, ensuring no corner of the community is left behind.

For the business community, TRL is a valuable—yet often underused—partner. Entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, and job seekers have access to a wide range of services, many of which are available remotely. From market research tools and grant databases to printing, high-speed internet, and professional development resources, the library offers essential support at no cost. Flexibility and innovation continue to shape the library experience. The Hoodsport branch has adopted Expanded Access Hours, allowing eligible cardholders to use the library from 7:00a to 8:00p, daily including holidays, even when staff aren’t present. This extended availability is particularly valuable for working professionals, remote employees, and students who need a reliable place to focus outside of regular hours.

TRL continues to adapt, inspire, and lead with purpose. Whether in Shelton, North Mason, or Hoodsport, the library reminds us that imagination, connection, and opportunity belong to everyone. Visit trl.org or stop by your local branch to discover everything your library has to offer.
